Mariesa’s Engagement Story
Mariesa wanted to share her engagement story with us — and we thought you’d enjoy it too!
“For Labor Day last year, my boyfriend and I got a beach house with some friends at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. On Sunday morning, my boyfriend ran in the Rock & Roll 1/2 Marathon. I waited at the finish line with our friends. His family all came in from out of town – his Mom from Philadelphia, sister and nephews from New Jersey, his oldest son and his girlfriend came in from DC, and his youngest son, who lives in Virginia Beach, was also there. We all waited in different places at the finish line.
I missed my boyfriend crossing the finish line, despite waiting on the sidelines for 2 1/2 hours. I was very sad and disappointed when I walked to the family reunion area on the beach to meet up with everyone. I was so proud of him and I had missed his big finish. Everyone was there waiting with him – everyone was there but me. I was really angry.
Anyway, I had been carrying his bag while he was running, and after he hugged me he asked me for it. He opened the bag and pulled out a Tiffany box. Not to be That Girl, but it’s not all that unusual for him to give me a gift in a Blue Box, so I really wasn’t expecting anything THIS out of the ordinary.
He handed it to me and said, ‘Thank you for being my coach.’ I expected to find a little runner pendant or something inside. Instead, much to my surprise and delight, it was a heart shaped charm with the inscription ‘Marry Me’. I don’t think it really registered. I, believe it or not, was speechless – I’m not the quiet kind of girl. He said something like, ‘Generally people answer that question.’
I asked him if he would get down a knee. He said he was hot and sweaty. He had just run 13.1 miles. I told him I’d been waiting a lot of years for this. So, wonderful man that he is, he got down on a knee for me and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes. I’d be crazy not to marry him.
By the way, he said he’d been carrying the Blue Box around with him for months waiting for the right moment — and it just seemed like the right moment…”
